Memorial Day Rant and Military Appreciation
I’m embarrassed.
No other way to say it. Below are the top memorial day post for the week on the gram. Absolutely unacceptable that this is what draws the most attention for the upcoming day of remembrance on a platform of 1 billion people. Party packs? Chip and Joanna garbage? Floral arrangements? You have got to be shitting me!
So no appetizer or memes this week, time to educate and remember. Just try to scroll past this trash.
So before we get to the time off, start the clock on summer, or start the parties that may ensue-we must understand what this special occasion is REALLY all about.
Here are the facts and how this special day came to be
Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance for everyone who has died serving in the American armed forces. The observed holiday, originally known as Decoration Day, started after the Civil War to honor the Union and Confederate dead. On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. Today, each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.
So this weekend instead of screaming Happy Memorial Day from the jacked up 4 wheeler when you're stuck in the mud, be thankful for those that made the ultimate sacrifice.
In honor of those who never made it home. Thank you for your sacrifice.
-The Captain
PS: If you have served, shoot me a note. I want to thank you personally.
